The quarry has always taken men. Now someone is choosing which ones.

The quarry has always taken men. Now someone is choosing which ones.

In Bedrock, Ontario, the lime quarry has always taken men. Then, at three in the morning, a loaded haul truck goes over the north face and into the pit, and the driver is one of the men who were there the night an electrician named Garry Burke died ten years ago. The company called that death a lockout violation. The town stopped talking about it. Somebody never stopped counting.

Detective Sam Finch, Major Crime out of Kingston, hears the call on his scanner because he doesn’t sleep. Four years sober and barely holding his own compulsions in check, he follows the fire into a town that buries its secrets in stone. With his partner, Brenda Scouts, who notices every inconsistency and writes it all down, he finds brakes that fail, radios that go dead, machines that start when a man is still inside them, and a grieving widow, Marion Burke, who is the only one willing to say out loud what everyone else calls bad luck. As the bodies mount, Bedrock must choose what it will protect: four hundred jobs, or the truth buried under ten years of limestone.

Bedrock Murders is a dark, gritty psychological thriller about grief, corporate negligence, and a town that closes ranks, from T.D. Hilderley.

Read this if you love: small-town crime with moral consequence; industrial gothic atmosphere; detective suspense driven by grief and systems, not romance tropes.

Content note: industrial accidents, sabotage and murder, mob scapegoating, workplace death, grief, and psychologically intense material. Adult psychological crime. Not romantasy and not a comfort read.

Start here for T.D. Hilderley’s psychological-darkness shelf if you want crime and industrial gothic rather than romantasy. Read next: The House of Travino for institutional control thriller energy, or Darkwater Glenn for quieter literary trauma without a detective engine. Romantasy readers looking for Elemental Love or Torn Into the Darkness: this is a different lane.
